Chapter 17: The Fungi
The fungi include include the best-characterized eukaryotic organism, the budding yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. In this chapter we analyze its genome, comprised of 16 chromosomes, and use bioinformatics tools such as the Saccharomyces Genome Database (SGD). We explore the phenomenon of whole-genome duplication that occurred in S. cerevisiase and other fungi, and discuss mechanisms of genome evolution. Finally, we survey the genomes of other fungi from Candida albicans and Neurospora crassa to the fission yeast Schizosaccharomyces pombe.
